What Are the 14 Punctuation Marks in English Grammar, punctuation marks.use of punctuation

What is punctuation?

Punctuation is the use of marks for pauses in speech. It is used in writing to make it meaningful & helpful for pronunciation.
So, the process of using marks of pause is called Punctuation. The  signs of Punctuation are given below:

FULL STOP (.)

NOTE OF INTERROGATION (?)

NOTE OF EXCLAMATION ( ! )

COMMA (,)

SEMICOLON (;)

COLON (:)

APOSTROPHE COMMA (')

INVERTED COMMA

QUOTATION MARK (" )

HYPHEN (- )

USE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF PUNCTUATION MARKS 

FULL STOP [ .]
The full stop is a long pause in a sentence.
Rule, when to use 

1. It is used to end assertive sentence, imperative sentence & optative sentence.

Example:-

Karim is a good boy.
He reads in class X.

Please give me a glass of water.
Go to the blackboard.

May you live long.
May God bless you.

2. It is used after abbreviation & initials.

Example:-
B.A ,M.A. ,B.DO. , S.D.O. , MR. MITRA. , MRS.SEN.,

NOTE OF INTERROGATION  [ ?]
The note of interrogation is the long pause for a question.
Rule, when to use note of interrogation.

1. At the end of a sentence which asks a question.

Example:-
Who are you?
Where will you go?
Did you go there?

2.In brackets to express doubt.

Example:-
He was born on 5th July {?} in 2000 [?].

NOTE OF EXCLAMATION 

The note of exclamation is used in exclamatory sentence especially.

Rule.
1. It is generally used after the words of emotion such as Alas, hurrah, bravo, hi, hello,tata.bye.fie, oh, etc.

Example:-

Alas! he is no more.

Bravo! you have well done.

2. It is used after addressing.
Example:

Gentleman & ladies!

3.when an exclamatory sentence begins with what, when, how, etc. , The not of exclamation is used after the sentence.

Example:
What nice birds it is!
How beautiful you are!

 COMMA {,}
The comma is a short pause.
Rule.
1. The comma is used to separate three or more words or phrases of the same classes.
Example:
Ram, Shyam,jadu are going to market.

2. The comma is used to separate the vocative case.
Example :

Rahim, come here.
I am sir, your obedient student.
Always remember, my son.

3. The comma is used to separate introductory words.
Example
Yes, he will come here.
No, I am not going there.

4. The comma is used before the quation mark.

Example 

I said to him, " come here."
They told me," Do not run in the sun."

5. The comma is used before & after apposition.

Example:

Vidyasagar is called the traditional modernizer of India.

Delhi is called the Rome of Asia.

6. The comma is used before & after a parenthesis.
Example;
He is, after all, an honest man.

7. The comma is used after an absolute phrase.
Example;
 The sun has risen, the fog dispersed.

8. The comma is used after an adverbial phrase & clause.
Example;

When we arrived, it was too early.

If it rains, we shall not go there.

SEMICOLON {;}

The semicolon makes a short pause rather than full stop and longer pause than comma.so,.comma is used below a full stop to make a semicolon.

Rule.
1. The semicolon is used between two clauses of a compound sentence when they are not joined by a coordinate conjunction.
Example;
The sun rises today at 5:30 am; sets at 5 pm
To err is human; to forgive divine.

2. The semicolon is used between coordinate clauses with and, but, still, yet, etc. when the subjects are different.
Example;
The music came to an end: and the musician was greeted heartily.
There was a moment's silence, and the girl burst into tear.

USE OF COLON [:]
The colon represents a long pause than the semicolon.
Rule

1. The colon is used before listed items that are introduced by such words as follows, the following, thus, these.etc.
Example:
His virtues are as follow sincerity, punctuality, and truthfulness.

2. The colon is used to separate two sentences of which the second explains more fully the meaning of first.
Example:

I know Dr. Paul very well; we lived together for a long time.

3. The colon is used to introduce a formal question with or without quotation marks.
Example
Mary: "Is not the soup boiling yet?"

APOSTROPHE COMMA {,}
1. It is used to form the possessive of any singular noun if it is animated.
Example;
This is Apus's umbrella.
2. Only apostrophe comma is used to form the possessive of a plural noun, where the plural number is formed with s/es.
Example:
we read in a Boys's school.

3. The apostrophe comma is used to indicate the omission of a letter or letter in a word.
Example:
I'm- I am
you're-You are

Isn't-Is not

INVERTED COMMA {"}
The inverted commas are not pauses
Rule:
1. The inverted comma is used to indicate a direct speech or quotation in a sentence.
Example:
Amal said,"I know the man."
"where are you going ?"

2.sometimes inverted comma is used to indicate the title of books, poem, stories,etc.and to draw attention to a word.
Example:
" The Merchant of Venice " is written by Shakespeare.

DASH {___}

1. The dash is used to mark a break or abrupt turn in a sentence.
Example;
If my mother alive______ but why should I lament for the past?

2. It is used to indicate a significant pause.
Example:
The hero of the story is rich,clever,charming,but_______ a gambler.

3. It is used to join the parts of a compound sentence.
Example: father-in-law.

HYPHEN [ -]
RULE
1. The hyphen is used to joint the parts of a compound word.
Example:
Father-in-laws
Mother-in-laws

use of  First bracket brackets, Bracket
Rule
1. The first brackets are used to enclose words in a sentence to make the meaning clear.
Example:
He said that his friend {sisir} had got the prize.

2. It is used to enter extra information
Example:
modern music {after 1980} is not of a high mark.

3. It is used to enclose serial numbers.
Example;
Classify the headline{1} food {2} clothes

USE OF SECOND BRACKETS {} 
Rule 
1.one second brackets is used to denote the pairsin vertical line
Example:
{activae voice.........
passive voice.........

2. Two-second brackets are used to enclose the first brackets between them.
Example:
{2*5 (3-2}

USE OF THIRD BRACKETS []
Rule
Example:
1. It is used in lieu of the first brackets in American style.
Example:
Rahim [the captain] hopes for victory.
It is used to enclose serial numbers and in some mathematical figure.
[1],[2],[3],[4]

USE OF ASTERISK [***]
1.an asterisk is used to draw more attention to a point.
Example;
*'I' is capitalized in all cases when it is pronoun of first person singular number.
2.Two,three, or more asterisk are used to show some ommission in a statement specially in paragraph and stanza.
Example;
loveliest of the tree is cherry now.
